Many California children experience health problems that impact school performance and general well-being due to poor nutrition and a lack of physical activity. These health issues can lead to lifelong health problems including diabetes and heart conditions. The rate of childhood obesity is alarming; statistics indicate that more than one out of four California students is overweight.
Research shows that well-nourished, active students have better concentration, school attendance and test scores. In reconition of this fact, the
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds project address this connection between health and learning. For many of the students plagued by inactivity and poor nutrition, the school is an ideal place to provide opportunities for safe and engaging physical activities and nutritious meals.
Many districts have already started working on these issues by addressing healthier food options and increased physical activity. However, there is much more that can be done. The
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds project works to increase CTA member awareness and provides
resources about what can be done in the classroom, at the school site, and with the district to improve the quality of life for all students and staff.
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is in its beginning stages, but many of our
partners and other organizations have been addressing these issues for years and we encourage you to learn more about their resources. This website can be a valuable resource for CTA members and staff by connecting you to a myriad program
resources,
educational information, and proven
strategies to promote state and local policy change.
We are currently administering a survey of teachers and teacher association staff to better understand your perceptions of physical activity, physical education, and nutrition. Please take a few minutes out of your day to take the survey and help us design a program that will be most beneficial to you. YOU COULD WIN A $100 GIFT CARD!
This project is growing every day, so please continue to check back to see our progress and updated information.
