Medi-Cal for Families
The Medi-Cal for Families program provides comprehensive no-cost medical, dental (Denti-Cal), and vision insurance to families with low incomes. Both working and non-working families can be eligible for Medi-Cal. Families enrolled in this program are not asked to pay premiums or co-payments for any services.
Medi-Cal is part of the federal government’s Medicaid program and is run by California’s Department of Health Care Services.
The following are the age and income requirements for the Medi-Cal program. The federal poverty level varies relative to family size. For more information the federal poverty level, please click here.
- Children age 0 to 1 (and pregnant women) are eligible for Medi-Cal if their families at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
- Children age 1 to 6 are eligible for Medi-Cal if their families are at or below 133% of the federal poverty level.
- Children age 6 to 19 are eligible for Medi-Cal if their families are at or below 100% of the federal poverty level.
- Children age 19 to 21 are eligible for Medi-Cal if their families are at or below 92% of the federal poverty level.
Additionally, the following requirements apply:
- Must be residents of California
- Must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or qualified immigrants

Some counties in California have managed care programs under the Medi-Cal Managed Care Division. There are currently 25 counties in which the residents receive Medi-Cal Managed Care. Additionally, the Medi-Cal dental program, Denti-Cal, has a managed care program.
