Healthy Families

imageHealthy Families provides low-cost, comprehensive health insurance for uninsured children whose family incomes are too high to qualify for Medi-Cal.  This is a program for the children of working parents.  For example, children in a family of four earning up to $55,125 per year would be eligible.  Families are asked to contribute a small amount in premiums and co-payments. 


Healthy Families is California’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and is funded in part by the federal government.  The program is managed by the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB).


Eligibility Requirements

The following are the age and income requirements for the Healthy Families program.  The federal poverty level varies relative to family size.  For more information the federal poverty level, please click here.

  • Children from 0 to 1 year old are eligible if their families make between 200% and 250% of the federal poverty level.
  • Children from 1 year to 6 years old are eligible if their families make between 133% and 250% of the federal poverty level.
  • Children from 6 to 19 years old are eligible if their families make between 100% and 250% of the federal poverty level.


The following are additional requirements for Healthy Families.  The child (children)

  • Must be residents of California
  • Must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or qualified immigrants
  • Be without job-based coverage for three months prior to applying for the program (there are some exceptions)

Cost

Healthy Family premiums can range from $4 to $17 per month per child to a maximum of $51.  The premium amount is determined by the size of the family, family income, and the insurance plan combination (medical, dental, vision).  Co-payments are $5 and are only required for some non-preventative services.  There is a $250 maximum per family.
