Why is health insurance important?

Even if your child is healthy, preventative care is important. Kids need health insurance to:

• See a doctor to prevent an illness from becoming more serious.
• Miss fewer days of school, be more ready to learn, and participate in school sports and activities.
• Get the regular medical and dental check-ups they need in order to grow into strong and healthy adults.

What about Healthy Families and Medi-Cal?

HEALTHY FAMILIES provides low-cost insurance for families with incomes too high to qualify for Medi-Cal.

MEDI-CAL provides no-cost health insurance for families with low incomes.

What are the benefits?

• Both programs offer comprehensive medical, dental, vision and mental health coverage. (This includes hospitalizations, prescription medications, doctor's visits, teeth cleanings and eyeglasses.)
• Healthy Families and in many cases Medi-Cal offers a choice of private health insurance plans.

Who is eligible?

• Children up to age 19.
• Many working families qualify depending on family size and income. (You can own a house or car and still qualify.) For example, a family of 4 making up to $3834 a month or $46,008 a year may be eligible.
• Children who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or qualified immigrants, including legal permanent residents, are eligible. Even if you are not a legal resident, you child may still qualify.
• Using health care, with the exception of nursing home care, will generally not affect your chances of getting a green card and will not affect your application for citizenship.

What if my child does not qualify for Healthy Families or Medi-Cal?

If your child does not qualify for Healthy Families or Medi-Cal because your income is too high or because of your child's immigration status, he or she may be eligible for other state or local programs.

What is the cost

HEALTHY FAMILIES can cost between $4-$9 per child per month, (with a maximum cost of $27) depending on family size, income and the health plan you choose.

MEDI-CAL is no cost for children. (Some co-payments apply for parents.)
