HEALTHY KIDS Programs

Within California there are managed care health coverage programs, such as the HEALTHY KIDS program, designed to insure children whose families are not eligible for Medi-Cal and Healthy Families and include the undocumented and those with higher incomes (up to 300% of federal poverty level.)

These programs have been implemented to serve those children who fall through the cracks of government programs. Like Healthy Families and Medi-Cal, these health insurance programs offer comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and mental health coverage. (This includes hospitalizations, prescription medications, doctor’s visits, teeth cleanings, and eyeglasses.)

Children's Health Initiatives

California counties have had the primary responsibility for providing health care to uninsured residents. Many of these counties have created a model for expanding health coverage called the Children¹s Health Initiative (CHI). These CHIs are supported with a diverse mix of public financing and private foundation support.

According to the Institute for Health Policy Solutions, these programs have cumulatively enrolled more than 80,000 children in their Healthy Kids programs and covered tens of thousands more under Medi-Cal and Healthy Families

Health plans offering these programs include:
